At the request of the National University of Rwanda and the Kigali Central University Hospital (CHUK) in Kigali, the Divisions of Trauma and General Surgery at the MUHC have been approached to support and develop the residency program at CHUK, the only general surgical residency program in the country. In close collaboration with our Rwandan partners, a four year general surgery curriculum has been developed and was implemented in January 2010. This curriculum includes both didactic and clinical teaching.
This privilege is an excellent opportunity to help mold the future surgeons of Rwanda. The program has led to research-based initiatives evaluating injury and surgical epidemiology in the region. In addition, inter-regional cooperation with Tanzanian trauma leadership has led to the independent implementation of the Trauma Team Training Such academic and clinical cooperation invaluable in the expansion and improvement of regional trauma systems.
